ONE DAY BY DAVID NICHOLLS

The true test to how well a book is written is the emotions that the book stirs up in the reader. There were many times where I felt like throwing this book against the wall. There were also times where I felt like hugging this book. And at times I just felt like strangling the lead characters (well, in particular Dexter).
I took a long time to read this book (about a month or so on and off) mainly because I found it hard to get through the parts of Dexter that I didn’t like. It was hard because I just wanted to scream at him or slap him so that he could wake up and actually take responsibility for his actions.
As the years go by, (this book tells the story of Emma and Dexter over 20 years) I developed a liking towards Dexter and when that happened, I started to read faster. Let’s just say that I totally did not expect the ending so when I got to that point, the book reduced me to tears. In fact, I even had a dream (which I can’t tell you, or you’ll have to kill me for revealing spoilers) about Dexter and Emma.
In the middle of the story, a reader might ask this question – ‘Where the hell is this story going?’ In fact, I asked this question to myself as well, and I did not know the answer. If you pick up this book and find yourself asking this question, trust me just go on because it’s worth it.
This book is definitely not chick literature. It is not written for girls to read about love or about romance. It’s just the lives of two people. And well, love and friendship, ultimately is a huge part of life, there’s no denying it.
