PENELOPE

It doesn’t matter if you are fat or if you are thin. It doesn’t matter how you look or what size you are because every girl on the planet, no matter how beautiful will feel some kind of pressure from the external world about how she looks. Society and people can be so mean, thus being very influential on how a woman should look like.

For Penelope, it was a case of looking normal or looking like a freak. She not only had to deal with society’s idea of how a woman should look like but also how a normal human being should look like. Being born with a pig’s nose is not “normal”- in fact it is just the opposite. Because of this ‘defect’ she was sheltered from the world her entire life because of her over protective mother. Imagine not knowing what a park looks like, imagine not knowing what a bar looks and feels like, also not knowing what beer tastes like. That was what Penelope was like being meeting Max, a guy who was supposed to be a blue blood who could finally break the curse.

The thing about this movie that really got to me when I first watched it in the cinemas was the simple conversations that Max and Penelope had. They fell in love without knowing what the other looks like, which to me is amazing. Lots of people get confused between love and lust. Majority of people think they are in love when they get physically intimate with another person. Or in a lot of cases, the lusting happens before love comes about. So this movie was very different. And being the hopeless romantic that I am, this definitely stuck with me.

Another thing I love about this movie is the kiss they shared at the end of it. It’s everything a kiss should be – unexpected, intense, passionate. The way he grabbed her was just perfect. He literally took her breath away. I remember telling the friend I was watching the movie with that the way he kissed her was exactly the way I would want to be kissed. After watching a fair bit of movies so far in my life, I have never ever felt that way after watching a kissing scene. (Except maybe the upside down kiss in Spiderman, but that’s just because I just really like Spiderman.)

What made this movie amazing for me though, was after I met someone who appreciates this movie as much as I do. Who understands EXACTLY why I love this movie, every single detail of it. I find so much joy in sharing things with people, but at the same time, I am rather selfish about who i share the movies/music/books I love with, mainly because it all means too much to me to just share it with just anyone. Now though, I cannot think of this movie without thinking of this special someone. Whenever I watch Penelope, I feel like this someone is right there with me, and everything else just fades away.
