REFLECTIONS : WHY TRAVEL?

Anytime you want to know about a place, or an issue, all you have to do is read up about it on the Internet or buy a book on that particular subject or country and then you would get everything you wanted right there and then. In today’s world, information about any place is not hard to find. The world is in your fingertips, literally.

If we can find out so much about a place through books and also the Internet, why is the travel industry still booming; why does one long to travel?

The reason is simple. Reading about a country is different from being there physically; Different from experiencing the culture shock. For example, I was really young when my family decided to travel around the south of India. I knew that there were beggars in India, that there were people so poor there that they had to beg for water. I had seen pictures, heard stories, but nothing could prepare me for the sight that i witnessed. A long line of beggars standing in a straight row, waiting for tourists to give them some money. There was no way you could give one beggar cash without giving the rest of them anything. So you had to make the decision of not giving anyone anything. I was just a child when I took that trip, but I am sure that the image of those beggars would forever be in my mind.

When you travel, you meet people of different lifestyles. Travelling allows you to learn from people you would not be able to meet if you did not decide to go there. Learning from others, being exposed to different cultures and mindsets helps a person in terms of personal growth.

Coming from the view point of a writer, the more experiences you gain while you travel, the more depth and substance your writing will have. As a writer, it is always important to have something to say, to have an opinion on things. Travelling opens up our mind to different possibilities. When we are exposed to different things; different thoughts of different people, only then can we develop a fully thought opinion about a particular topic.

Travelling is also important as it serves as a form of escape. Millions of dollars are spent and invested in the building of spas and resorts all around the world. We need a break from our day to day lives every now and then. Going to a totally different environment helps us recharge our batteries so that we can do better when we return to our lives.

Travelling, basically, helps us to grow.
